Dansateliers: here to move the city

We are Dansateliers, and it’s time to show Rotterdam and all its residents who we are and why we exist.

Dansateliers is the place where young dance makers from all genres can develop and professionalise. It is a home where they can discover, grow, and mature, developing their own voice and shaping their careers as choreographers, dance makers, and/or artistic leaders. We are here to provide intensive support and guidance to young and emerging dance makers in their artistic development, professionalisation, and entrepreneurship: in Rotterdam, nationally, and internationally. They belong to the city and are here to move the city.

From 30 September to 20 October, we will showcase our campaign – Dansateliers, here to move the city – in Rotterdam. To express who we are and why we are here, we have developed a campaign featuring four images of our dance makers. These creators, who have been connected to us for varying lengths of time, are shown at four iconic locations in Rotterdam, demonstrating that we have been here for over 30 years. We belong to the city and are here to move the city.

Dansateliers is here for our dance makers, but also for all Rotterdammers; those from the neighbourhood, those curious about our makers’ performances, and anyone who wants to join us for our weekly Movement Classes: everyone is welcome.

The four makers featured in the campaign are Connor Schumacher, Marta & Kim, Shaquille George, and Yoko Haveman. You can encounter these images throughout the city during the campaign weeks, on A0 boards, pepper mills, or on the screen at the intersection of Coolsingel and Westblaak (Citylens). And maybe, you might even see them live: we’ll keep you updated through our socials.

Connor Schumacher

Connor Schumacher is founder and artistic leader of Stichting ARK.
Connor has developed as a dance artist under the wings of Dansateliers. Connor’s social choreographic practice developed through his participation in several European research projects, including Performing Gender, Dancing Museums and Empowering Dance. He searched for new ways of interaction with an audience and the soft skills people can develop through dance. In 2019 he won the Prize of the Nederlandse Dansdagen.
It is his deep belief that society would be better if we danced everyday.

Marta & Kim

Marta Alstadsæter and Kim-Jomi Fischer form the Norwegian/Dutch duo Marta & Kim. They are known for their unique performances where circus and dance intersect. With their diverse backgrounds, they bring together different perspectives, allowing them to explore universal meanings in their work. Their performances focus on human connection, using simple physical metaphors to create accessible imagery that draws the viewer into a poetic narrative or atmosphere.

Shaquille George

Shaquille was born and raised in Curaçao and moved to the Netherlands at the age of 18. They began by teaching themself movement styles of Hip-Hop origins and later earned their BA in Urban Contemporary Dance from Fontys Fine Arts School. Where they were able to learn contemporary dance styles mixed with Hip Hop styles, to add to their own movement language.

Yoko Haveman

Brazilian/Japanese Yoko Haveman is a multidisciplinary creator: director, choreographer, dance artist, and photographer in performing arts and film. She earned her bachelor’s-degree in Modern Theater Dance at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. In 2022, she was nominated for the Young Swan for the most impressive dance performance.
