Andreas Hannes (he/him, GR) is a choreographer that creates eclectic works through practices that engage with gravity and aerodynamic forces. He uses rhythm and vibration as a source for informing and revealing the body in states of transit and transformation, often shaped by proximity, tension, and unexpected alignments across disciplines and traditions.
Born and raised in a city shaped by cinema, Thessaloniki, Andreas’ love for film is inherent. So naturally, while training countless groups of people in personal development and resilience during his career as a social worker, he made films. After he enjoyed an education in both music and film, he had an intense need to return to the body and to involve it in his artistic practice.
In 2014, before he knew it, he was accepted into SNDO – School for New Dance Development, where he began his elaborate research into continuous skipping. He graduated in 2018 with his performance The City, which earned him the Moving Forward Trajectory Award that same year.
He is an Associate Artist at Dansateliers Rotterdam (from 2025 to 2028) and a member of Amsterdam-based collective Dance Space Destiny. He has started his own company, Rattleworks, which presents its first performance Anthology in 2026. Next to this, he has been affiliated with Cinedans Dance on Screen Festival in Amsterdam since 2011, and currently works as the Artistic Director of the festival.
The productions of Andreas Hannes:
Anthology (2025 – 2026) is a dynamic performance built around a deceptively simple movement: skipping. The choreography mirrors the structure of these mash-ups: fast-paced, and continuously evolving. Dozens of musical fragments merge into a seamless flow, just as Anthology weaves together references to diverse dance styles, internet culture, and popular imagery.
Sway (2023) is inspired by the movement of swaying – the energy and motion of tipping in and out of balance. In this rhythmical and adventurous solo, Andreas Hannes swerves through landscapes, Greek mythology, musical timelines and invented histories. The protagonist is propelled through these environments by a constant and sensual re-configuration of his body and the space. As he sways, forms and references melt and transform as soon as they start taking shape.
In REVERBERATED EMISSIONS (2021), bodies, space and music reverb on each other. Through reconstructing, warping, pushing and pulling, the dancers fall, skip and bend to exhilarating and sometimes comical environments. Their sensual interplay reminisces of a dance that might have already happened but is yet to come.
In 2020 Andreas created a work with and for the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst as part of DANSLOKAAL 8 with the title Warping Soul. This performance was selected at the end of 2021 as part of the #Twenty22 selection of the European platform Aerowaves.
In Tremble (2019), a group of dancers embarks on a journey without a destination. They move across the stage by drawing geometrical patterns and falling in and out of rhythm. Together, they form a body that dynamically moves through space. Through the continuous flow of skipping, you are pulled into the movement; as if you were sitting on a moving vehicle, trembling, you become part of a road-trip, in which your memories and inspiration intertwine.
THE CITY (2018) is the first stage outcome of the, in-development, practice of continuous skipping (as in skipping down the street). Two performers are entering the stage to begin a stream of skipping, creating pathways and outlining geometries, while repositioning themselves in the imaginary grid of a city.
