STUDIO PRESENTATION
Shaquille George with their work-in-progress of Phantom Harmony

After participating in ‘One Night’s Dance’, Shaquille George returns as a creator at Dansateliers to further develop his previous solo ‘Phoenix’ into a new performance: Phantom Harmony.

Shaquille is a physical and emotional storyteller, pure and simple. In their work, personal stories and experiences are central. Through their work, they open up possibilities to discuss taboos. Phantom Harmony sheds light on mental health. “With my work, I try to develop concepts that often remain unspoken but are important to me as an individual. I believe this is my way of contributing to the bigger picture.”

In Phantom Harmony, Shaquille takes us through their experience with psychosis and how they have dealt with it. “Phantom Harmony is the story of my journey and how I struggled with my mental health. It emphasizes the importance of my artistic perspective in conveying this story.

“I hope to start a dialogue or open a small window where people take a moment to think about themselves and others around them who might be struggling with this subject. I feel that society often avoids discussions that make us uncomfortable. We may not even acknowledge or completely ignore their importance.”

During the residency, Shaquille challenged themselves to develop a set choreography and not work from an improvisational structure. They worked on movement material that approached both the physical and emotional state of the body in psychosis. Additionally, Shaquille worked on a spatial arrangement of these phases.

On Thursday, June 13, Shaquille presents their work-in-progress and there will be room for discussion and feedback on their work.
