Keti Koti / Kadena Kibrá
A day to celebrate freedom.

Dansateliers is collaborating with Melisa Cijntje to come together as a community and celebrate Keti Koti/Kadena Kibrá: a day of remembrance and celebration of freedom.

We warmly welcome everyone on Monday, July 1st, at Dansateliers for a community dinner with ‘Free Heri Heri’ and an additional program. Enjoy a music jam session and a free Movement Class by Shaquille George, dedicated to the theme of Keti Koti.

In collaboration with the initiative Free Heri Heri for all by the KIP Republic foundation, we are preparing 100 meals in total, served as vegetarian, vegan or fish options.
Entry, meal, and participation are completely free. Because we are limited in the number of meals and want to accommodate everyone as well as possible, we ask everyone to get their free ticket online. Can’t manage that? Feel free to walk in, and we will help you further.

Would you prefer to pick up your meal? That’s possible! We are preparing a total of 30 takeaway meals that will be ready from 7:00 PM. All meals are on a first-come, first-served basis. So, be on time.

Abolition of Slavery
Slavery was officially abolished on July 1, 1863. In commemoration, Keti Koti is remembered and celebrated in Suriname and the Netherlands. Keti Koti has become an umbrella term and moment in the Netherlands for the abolition in all seven countries within the Dutch Kingdom where the abolition took place: Suriname, St. Eustatius, Saba, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. In these countries, there are various moments when the abolition or resistance against slavery is commemorated.

Heri Heri
Heri Heri is a dish whose ingredients were part of what the enslaved people were given to eat. The root vegetables were especially important because they are rich in carbohydrates and easy to cultivate, thus making a hearty and filling meal. Today, the combination of these root vegetables with salted fish and sometimes an egg is considered a delicacy and is called Heri Heri.

Every year, KIP Republic shares a Heri Heri recipe from a Chef who creates their own version. This year, the recipe comes from Chef Nikita. You could say that Chef Nikita’s Heri Heri is an ode to the Keti Koti celebrations he experienced in Suriname. With grandma to the waterfront, just like the Heri Heri, simple but special.

Movement Class
Shaquille George is an in-house creator at Dansateliers who is a true storyteller as a maker and performer. They are not shy about delving deeply into emotions, touching many. This Movement Class will be themed around Keti Koti, based on their work Nos Bida. During this Movement Class, you will encounter the movements and philosophy of Shaquille, paired with historical input and accompanying discussions.
