In Cold Hawaii, dance artist Sigrid Stigsdatter Mathiassen retreats on the island of heart-breaks. She explores the vast emptiness, the territory of pleasure and the realm of pause and silence after something breaking down. Like a heartbreak that builds up only to break down again, she creates a character that rises only to disappear afterwards. Through movement, sound and words she moves between the harsh reality, and the soft, worlds of her imagination.
In 2016 Dansateliers (Rotterdam, NL) and the Spanish art centre Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao, ES) started a new exchange-project for young, talented choreographers. During the project, two different dancemakers get the opportunity to develop a new solo for themselves. The artist that are selected for 2019-2021 are Sigrid Stigsdatter Mathiassen (Dansateliers) and Jaiotz Osa (Akzua Zentroa). Originally Cold Hawaii was due to premier during Moving Futures Festival in 2020. Corona prevented that to happen, but her solo premiered online as part of the festival in 2021. A live premiere with a real audience present is happening on October 2nd in the frame of the Dutch Dance Festival.
