Wrapped

”To be wrapped around something familiar; A nice warm blanket on a cold day, your favourite sweater or jacket, a nice feeling of a memory, someone’s arms around you, or… the darkness that has you so tightly in its grip that it feels like you can’t breathe and you don’t know how to get rid of it because, it’s the only thing that feels… familiar.”

WRAPPED
In this duet, Tuan Tran and Joseph Simon explore familiar places of discomfort; the entanglements our thoughts, actions and relationships wrap us into again and again until they become familiar constraints.

About the makers:

Tuan Tran, born and raised in the Netherlands, is of Vietnamese descent. As a person who could not express his inner world in words, he always felt most at home, most himself and most free in music and dance. With his roots in Hip Hop, preliminary training at the 5 O’Clock and ROCvA, he graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts (AHK), Urban Contemporary/Jazz- and Musical dance department. In 2015/16 he did an internship at Conny Janssen Danst. Currently, Tuan works as a freelancer based in Rotterdam and has worked with choreographers such as Dalton Jansen, Tu Hoang and Joseph Simon.

As a Bboy by origin, the ongoing process of research in one’s own body and exchange with others plays an important role for Joseph Simon. The common thread in all his work is the creation of so-called ‘Third Culture Spaces’. These are interstices between dance ‘languages’ in which the finding of new forms but especially the fusion or collision of practices and philosophies of different dance cultures is central. His focus is mainly on ballet, breaking and house dance.
