OPEN CALL BEYOND BORDERS

Open Call Beyond Borders – The Lab by Sheree Lenting

Beyond Borders: Crossing the intersection of Adoption, Cultural and Artistic Exchange through Dance

Apply to participate in a very special workshop for dance creatives with an adoption or foster care background. Dive into creative storytelling through dance and delve into themes such as adoption, identity, searching and loss, as well as tools for working with autobiographical elements in a brave and safe space.

Choreographer, curator and teacher Sheree Lenting initiates a 3 day-workshop inspired by the autobiographical performance Nabinam by Jean-Baptiste Baele. His choreographic focus lies in exploring the intricacies of social behaviour, a body’s historical background and memories, and physicality in motion through space. Jean-Baptiste was part of the top 20 selected artists of the European platform Aerowaves 2023, where he presented this work.

Sheree designs a creative workshop inviting three creative coaches and an expert on guiding and after care. The workshop will be concluded with a presentation for an invited audience.

Jean-Baptiste: ‘Nabinam is my autobiographical work where I intimately share my adoption story with the audience. Being adopted from Madagascar at the age of 6, I faced numerous challenges, including growing up alongside peers who were three years older due to age discrepancies on official documents. Dealing with constant comparisons to my family because of our different skin colours. Navigating the invisible bond I have with a twin sibling I never had the opportunity to grow up with. In this narrative piece, I use a diverse range of dance vocabulary, both movement and voice as forms of expression.”
