“Did you know the public would react this aggressively?”
To Come Between (2016) is a performance that was especially created in the monumental installation Notion motion by Olafur Eliasson in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, by artists Connor Schumacher, Luis Rios Zertuche, dramaturge Maaike Schuurmans and performer Majon van der Schot. Starting point of the work is an artistic research about ideas of authorship, appropriation, and the “self” in contemporary art.
Notion motion by artist Olafur Eliasson was re-exhibited in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen just after one of Eliasson’s other artworks The Kissing Earth was rejected in the same city. The reception for these two works can be seen as opposite, but they seem to have a lot in common. In To Come Between Connor Schumacher, Luis Rios Zertuche and Maaike Schuurmans highlight how both Notion motion and The Kissing Earth have an air of untouchable Utopia. Utopian thinking implies a strive for perfection. By making the public the center of the work a contrast appears.
