Movement Class XL met Joseph Simon

Sun 2 Jun | 13:00

Every first Sunday of the month you can join an extended version of the Movement Class in Dansateliers. The Movement Classes XL are specially constructed around Dansateliers’ 25th anniversary and are taught by different choreographers connected to the house. The class is an in-depth introduction to the movement material and working methods of the dance-artists. By the use of physical exercises and tasks they will take you along an exploration in improvisation, performance and body-awareness. Professional dancer, amateur or never seen a dancefloor before? No problem, the lesson is open for everyone.

On July 2nd the Movement Class XL is taught by Joseph Simon. Joseph investigates the relationship between urban and contemporary forms of movement. This exploration has led him to work with Alida Dors, Jochen Heckmann, Erik Kaiel and Jean-Guillaume Weis and inspires his work as a maker. His collaboration with Dansateliers was established in 2015. Under the umbrella of Dansateliers he developed the concept for Essais sur la danse classique, created the piece Allegory of a night as part of One Night’s Dance 2015, the solo Third Culture Kid (2016) and Infinite Games (2017) together with Jonas Frey.

During this extended version of the Movement Class he will introduce you to his way of working and creation methods.

What can the participants expect during the class?

‘To discover a whole palet of ways to instruct the body and be instructed by the body on how to move creatively.’

What do you want to explore during the class?

‘In the movement class we will practice different ways of thinking and writing movement with mind and body.

On the one hand, we have an intellectual practise of dancing: the body thinking and writing through different systems of movement logic (with approaches of urban and contemporary dance improvisation methods). In contrast to this: more sensual and intuitive approaches to movement, guided by music and the immediate needs of the body.

What are the different qualities and pleasures of each of these approaches and how can we appreciate their respective particularity? Also, how can they interact and interwave in order to gain higher levels of complexity?’

What do you think the participants can gain from the class?

‘A playful understanding of the endless possible approaches to moving your body creatively and how to keep your mind interested and curious while dancing.’
